What's sold, who sells it and what rights a shopper has depend on federal rules that apply the same way across Mississippi, with one timing issue to flag: 10 Medicare Advantage plans offered somewhere in the state in 2026 will not be offered anywhere in Mississippi in 2027, and members of a non-renewing plan have a federal guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies.
What is Medigap and how is it different from Medicare Advantage in Mississippi?
Medigap is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay cost-sharing such as coinsurance and deductibles. It is not Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces how you get your Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan, often with its own network and extra features; Medigap instead sits behind Original Medicare and pays after Medicare pays.
You cannot use a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. In Mississippi, as everywhere, Medigap plans are standardized by federal letter, so a Plan G from one company covers the same federally defined benefits as a Plan G from another — premiums, service and underwriting are where companies differ.

When is the six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period in Mississippi and why does it matter?
The Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window that starts the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During it, any Medigap insurer selling in Mississippi must sell you any policy it offers at the same price it charges a healthy applicant, regardless of your health history.
Outside that window, in most situations a company can use medical underwriting — asking health questions and deciding whether to accept you and at what price. That is why the six-month window is the most protective time to buy for most people.
What happens if my Medicare Advantage plan is not returning in Mississippi in 2027?
About 10 Medicare Advantage plans offered somewhere in Mississippi in 2026 will not be offered anywhere in the state in 2027, according to the CMS Landscape files. If your plan is one of them, you will receive a non-renewal notice and get a federal guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting.
Guaranteed issue also applies in a handful of other situations, such as losing employer retiree coverage or moving out of a plan's service area. Which Medigap letters you can buy under guaranteed issue, and the deadline to use the right, are set in federal rules at Medicare.gov.
Does Medigap cover prescriptions in Mississippi, or do I need a separate Part D plan?
Medigap sold today does not cover outpatient prescription drugs. To get drug coverage with Original Medicare and a Medigap plan, you add a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
Part D decisions happen during Annual Enrollment 2027, October 15 – December 7, 2026, with coverage effective January 1, 2027. For 2027, the Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026), the maximum a plan can set as its deductible is $700, and the national base beneficiary premium used in late-enrollment penalty math is $41.33. Individual plan premiums are set plan by plan. The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment for benefits payable beginning January 2027. The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible and the 2027 IRMAA brackets have not yet been announced.
How should I compare Medigap policies in Mississippi?
Start by comparing the same letter across companies — for example, Plan G against Plan G — because the federal benefits are identical by letter. From there, differences come down to premium, how the company raises rates over time, customer service, and whether the company has any extras.
The Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov lets you pull up Medigap options for your ZIP code, and each insurer's own documents (the "outline of coverage") give the specifics. For drug plans, Plan Finder shows premiums, deductibles, drug lists and pharmacy networks side by side.
