What is Medigap and how is it different from Medicare Advantage in Kentucky?
Medigap is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) to help pay cost-sharing like coinsurance and copays. It is not Medicare Advantage. A Medicare Advantage plan replaces how you get your Part A and Part B benefits through a private plan, often with a network and often with drug coverage built in. A Medigap policy, by contrast, sits on top of Original Medicare: you keep Original Medicare, use any provider that accepts it nationwide, and your Medigap policy pays its share of the gaps defined by the federal standardized plan letter you chose.
You cannot use a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. You pick one lane or the other for how your Part A and Part B costs are handled.

What is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period and why does it matter in Kentucky?
The Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a six-month window that starts the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During that window, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in Kentucky from any insurer that offers it, and the insurer cannot use your health history to turn you down or charge you more.
Outside that six-month window, insurers in most situations can require medical underwriting, which means your application can be reviewed based on your health. That is why the dates of your own Part B enrollment matter so much: they define a period when the door is widest.
What happens in Kentucky if my Medicare Advantage plan is not returning for 2027?
If your Medicare Advantage plan was offered in Kentucky in 2026 but will not be offered anywhere in the state in 2027, you have a federal guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap plans. CMS Landscape files show 21 such Medicare Advantage plans in Kentucky for the switch into 2027. Guaranteed issue means that, within the window Medicare sets, qualifying insurers must sell you specific Medigap plans without using your health to deny coverage or set a higher price.
Other situations also create guaranteed-issue rights — for example, losing certain employer retiree coverage. Medicare.gov describes which Medigap plans qualify and the deadlines that apply.
Does Medigap cover prescriptions in Kentucky?
No. Modern Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage, so Kentuckians who want drug coverage choose a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan separately. For 2027, Part D has an out-of-pocket cap of $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026), and the most any Part D plan may charge as a deductible is $700. The Part D base beneficiary premium used in the late-enrollment penalty calculation is $41.33 for 2027; actual plan premiums are set plan by plan.
Annual Enrollment 2027 runs October 15 – December 7, 2026, with choices taking effect January 1, 2027. That is the window to pick or switch a Part D plan to go with Original Medicare and your Medigap policy.
How should I compare Medigap policies in Kentucky?
Start with the plan letter, because every insurer that sells, say, Plan G in Kentucky must offer the same federally standardized benefits under that letter. Once you know the letter you want, the comparison across insurers comes down to things like premium, how premiums are set and change over time, customer service and billing practices. Use Medicare.gov's Medigap policy search for your own ZIP code, and request the outline of coverage directly from each insurer.
Also note: the Social Security Administration announced on October 14, 2026 a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment for benefits payable beginning January 2027, which can affect household budgeting for premiums.
Where can Kentuckians get free help with Medigap?
Free, official help is available at Medicare.gov and by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Both can walk you through Medigap rules, Part D enrollment and guaranteed-issue rights without charging you and without steering you to a specific insurer.
