Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31, letting people already in a Medicare Advantage plan make one change before the window closes.
- This window can only be used once, and it doesn't let people move from Original Medicare into Medicare Advantage or sign up for a stand-alone Part D plan for the first time.
- Anyone who misses this window generally has to wait for the fall Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7, unless they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
- The 2027 Part D cost changes, including a $2,400 out-of-pocket cap, are worth checking against any plan choice made under 2026 rules, and people can compare county-level plan options and Star Ratings for free using the Medicare.gov plan finder.
Gainesville retirees get a second chance to fix their Medicare choice
This window closes on March 31. After that, most people cannot switch again until the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7).
What you can actually do between January 1 and March 31
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP) is narrower than the fall enrollment window, and it only applies if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1. During this window you can:
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to a different Medicare Advantage plan.
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
- If you return to Original Medicare, you can also join a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.
You can only use this window once. If you switch on February 1 and then change your mind on March 1, that second switch generally will not go through.
What you cannot do in this window
The MA-OEP is not a do-over for everyone. If you are enrolled in Original Medicare on January 1 — even with a stand-alone Part D plan — this window does not let you jump into Medicare Advantage. You also cannot use it to join a Part D plan for the first time if you are staying on Original Medicare without one.
Those moves generally have to wait for the fall Annual Enrollment Period, or for a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify for one (for example, after a move or a change in Medicaid status).

What's new in 2027 that may change your math
Some Medicare changes are already set for 2027, and they are worth understanding before you switch anything:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: Your yearly out-of-pocket spending on covered prescription drugs is capped at $2,100 in 2026. Once you hit it, you pay $0 for the rest of the year for covered drugs.
- Part D deductible: The maximum allowable deductible for a Part D plan is $615 in 2026. Plans can set it lower.
- No more "donut hole": The old coverage gap was eliminated in 2025. Part D now has three phases: deductible, initial coverage, and catastrophic.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: You can choose to spread your drug costs across the calendar year in monthly payments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter. It doesn't lower the total cost — it just smooths it out.
- IRMAA: Higher-income beneficiaries pay an income-related surcharge on Parts B and D. In 2026, IRMAA begins above $109,000 in income for a single filer.
If your fall choice was based on 2026 rules, it is worth re-checking that the plan still fits under the 2027 structure.
Gainesville is in Alachua County — here's where to look
Medicare plan availability is set at the county level, not the city level. Gainesville is in Alachua County, so when you compare Medicare Advantage options, you are looking at what's offered across Alachua County.
The plan finder at medicare.gov lets you enter your ZIP code, add your prescriptions, and see every Medicare Advantage and Part D plan available in your county side by side. It's the most accurate, unbiased view you can get, and it's free.
Star Ratings, which run from 1 to 5 stars, are also visible there. They are a CMS quality measure — not a recommendation — but they can help you spot patterns in customer service, care coordination, and drug pricing accuracy.
A calm, practical checklist before you switch
Before you make any change during the January-to-March window, take 20 minutes and do this:
1. List your doctors. Confirm each one is in-network for any plan you're considering. In the Gainesville area, that includes checking UF Health, North Florida Regional, and any specialists you see. 2. List your prescriptions with dosage. Enter them into the plan finder so you can see real 2027 costs, not the prior year's. 3. Check the referral rules. Some plans require a primary care referral for specialists; others don't. 4. Look at the out-of-pocket maximum for medical costs, which is separate from the $2,400 Part D cap in 2027. 5. If you're leaning toward Original Medicare, think through whether you'll add a Medigap policy. In Florida, Medigap underwriting rules can affect whether you're accepted, so ask questions first.
