When a licensed agent makes sense

Licensed insurance agents and brokers are a different resource. They can enroll you in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan and answer detailed questions about specific plans they're contracted to sell. Good agents will lay out your options clearly and won't pressure you.

A few tips before you meet with one:

• Ask which carriers they represent. Some work with many; some with just one.
• Ask if they charge you anything. (They shouldn't — they're paid by the insurance company.)
